Narrative

'Cuthbert, a well-educated Catholic attorney, immigrated to Maryland in 1634-3-24 with Leonard Calvert. He found a good and powerful friend in Captain Thomas Cornwaleys, for whom he acted as agent, and who was with his patron in the engagement on the Chesapeake, between a pinnace commanded by a partisan of Claiborne, and two armed boats commanded by Cornwaleys for the government. He was a member of the Assembly 1637-8 and later. He was speaker of the House of Burgesses when it sat separate from the Council in 1649, and voted for the Toleration Act. Cuthbert also held a commission to seize illegal traders in 1638-9 and was a Justice of St Mary's Co Court in 1644.
Cuthbert's second marriage to Jane Eltonhead Moryson included a pre-nuptial agreement 1649-8-1.'
