Narrative

John succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Atholl in 1521. On 3 May 1522 he was enfeoffed. He claimed half the Barony of Rattray in his first wife's right (although it had long been a male fief), and whose father had already seized upon the greater part of the Rattray lands by force. In 1529 he entertained King James V of Scotland, the Pope nuncio, and various others.
