Veach, Juda A.

Birth Name Veach, Juda A.
Gender female
Age at Death 82 years, 3 months, 14 days

Narrative

Unmarried, with 4 children, Juda lived with her brother Daniel, two nephews John and Joseph plus her kids. She is listed as head of household in census 1880. Per family history as told to Jackie Hamlin Liford (Debbie's aunt) by her mother Margaret Mullis Hamlin, Juda was buried in the Underwood Cemetery in Faber, KY. That cemetery has several unmarked graves. Great-Uncle Bill Underwood (father of Marie, who married John W. Mullis), Whitley Co Sheriff, also served as jailor, and buried Whitley Co prisoners who had no family to claim them. Most of them were African-American. The story is that Juda was placed in the unmarked section for her sins. Her death certificate says she died of 'toxic colitis.'
In the 1920 census, she is incorrectly named as Inda A, rather than Juda A. She was living with daughter Mary Catherine and E.A. Mullis by then.
