Per the memories of granddaughter Joyce Hinkel Driscoll:
Leonard was killed in an auto accident on the way home from a bar called R.C.'s on Southside Dr, Louisville, KY. The car hit the RR underpass at 3rd St and Eastern Pkwy on his way home to S First St. He had been at the bar listening to his three sons play music, with Leonard on violin, Delbert on guitar and Fred providing vocals. Fred's wife Delores was also there, and was supposed to ride back with her father-in-law but did not want to leave. Leonard was alone in the car.
