Hugh fought in the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488, against King James III. In 1488 he was granted the Island of Arran for life, by the newly created King James IV. He held the office of Constable of Rothesay Castle in 1489. He held the office of Bailie of Bute in 1489. He held the office of Justiciary of Bute in 1489. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland].
