Narrative
Muirchertach I, High King of Ireland also went by the nick-name of 'mac Earcae' (or in English, Eirc's son), but may in fact belong to another king who was confused with him by later tradition. He was a member of the House of Cenél nEógain. In 482 he fought in the Battle of Ocha. He succeeded to the title of High King of Ireland in 507. He died in 534, allegedly drowned in a vat of wine when attacked in his own house at Cletty (in what is now County Meath).
