Bartholomew joined the Earl of Lancaster in his rebellion. He fought in the Battle of Boroughbridge on 16 March 1321/22, where he was taken prisoner, and later restored by Isabel, the Queen Consort. He held the office of Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1327. He held the office of Constable of Dover Castle in 1327. He was created 1st Lord Burghersh [England by writ] on 25 January 1329/30. He held the office of Chief Justice in Eyre, South of Trent between 1335 and 1343. He acquired the Castle of Ewyas Lacy, Herefordshire and Stoke-upon-Tern, Shropshire with his wife. He was appointed Knight Banneret in 1341. He held the office of Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1343. He held the office of Constable of Dover Castle in 1343.
