William was heir of Randolph de Lindesay, feudal lord of Northumbria. In 1164 he sat in Parliament [Scotland]. In 1174 he was a hostage for King William. He held the office of Justiciar [Scotland] after 1174. He was feudal Lord of Crawford, but styled Baron of Luffness in Parliament.
