Narrative
William succeeded to the title of 7th Earl of Morton circa September 1606. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in 1621-1627. He held the office of Lord High Treasurer [Scotland] between 1630 and 1636. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1633. He held the office of Captain of the Yeoman of the Guard between 1635 and 1644. On 16 March 1638 he was granted a charter of the lands, Earldom and Barony of Morton. As a Royalist he raised £100,000 by parting with the Dalkeith and other estates. On 15 June 1643 he was granted by Royal Charter the Orkney and Shetland Islands, redeemable on payment of £30,000.
