Narrative
From info posted on www.findagrave.com:
"Born in Prince William Virginia in 1760, Eliakim Powers and his older brother Jesse were the patriarchs that moved their families west into the as yet untamed wilderness of Kentucky. Jesse Powers had served in the Revolutionary War and for his service was granted land in the Virginia frontier area which later became the state of Kentucky.
The brothers lived in North Carolina for a while and married sisters. Jesse married Piercy Hamblin, & Eliakim married Elizabeth Hamblin in 1793.
After living in North Carolina several years, following his marriage they moved their families west into Kentucky by way of the Wilderness Trail through the Cumberland Gap. The newly opened wagon road through the Gap explored by Dr. Thomas Walker and widened by Daniel Boone and 30 or more axe men made expansion into Kentucky possible. The meteor crater that Middlesboro was later built on played a part in opening the gap somewhat.
Traveling the Wilderness trail, Eliakim Powers is rumored to have died enroute somewhere in the Cumberland Gap area, but his family eventually settled in the southeastern area of Kentucky in what later became Whitley County. The Powers family put down roots in this general area around Whitley & adjoining Knox County. Older brother Jesse continued farther west into Wayne County and settled there. According to historical accounts of early settlements of Kentucky, the settlers had a rough time with the Indians of the area, non of which were living there but the land was part of their hunting grounds.
Elizabeth eventually remarried to John Tye III, who was also a soldier from the Revolutionary War. John was reported to be the founder of Whitley County KY and built the first house there in the town of Carpenter on Rte 92."
Eliakim had children after 1800 so it is likely that he did not die en route.
