In 1775, Justus signed the Articles of Confederation at New Paltz, NY (near present day Poughkeepsie). He served during the Revolutionary War under Col. Levi Pawling's Regiment of the New York Militia. His wife's brother Levi Bishop served in the same regiment. Two signatures show his name spelled as Justus Hubbelll.

One of his military records shows:

After the war, he settled near Chilhowie with his family. Family notes indicate that he suffered from rheumatism and that his wife, Waitstill, helped finish the family home. It is no longer in existence, but was located near the cemetery at the Primitive Baptist Church, Chilhowie, Smyth Co, VA.

His will is recorded in Washington County, Virginia, Will Book A & B 1780-1814, pp. 202-3. His estate inventory was taken on May 2, 1796 and settled on April 11, 1810. Thomas Tilson was executor.
