Narrative

Edmund fought in the Scottish wars in 1306, and was invested as a Knight on 22 May 1306. He held the office of Captain-General North of the Trent in 1316. He was opposed to King Edward II for a long time, and was violent towards Piers Gavaston, who had beaten him in a tournament. In 1321 he changed sides, and was thereafter one of the few nobles who adhered to the King. He held the office of Chief Justiciar of North and South Wales in 1323. He held the office of Warden of the Welsh Marches in 1325. He was captured in Shropshire by the Queen Isabelle's party (the Despensers). He was attainted after his execution, when his estates and honors became forfeited. Records differ as to whether he was beheaded or drawn and quartered.
