Narrative

From the online genealogy of the Elisha King family, Chris-Laclair-MI:

'Clebert was not expected to live when he was born, and as a child heard repeatedly that he probably would never live to be an adult. He grew to almost 6 feet tall and was always athletic and strong. At 60 years of age he could still jump up, grab the bottom edge of the ceiling joists, swing up his legs, and pull himself up between the joists.
He left home when he was 14 years old, with about 35 cents in his pocket, and traveled all the way to California. It was almost two years before he returned to Alabama. He continued to travel for a few years, but each spring he would go back to Alabama, so he could play baseball. Although he 'rode the rails' like many people during the Depression, he never bummed for food - he always found some way to work for it - chopping wood, cleaning out a barn, hoeing a garden, etc. The jobs he had included such things as picking strawberries in California, following the wheat harvest in the Plains states, picking cotton in Louisana, and even working as a life guard in California.
He worked on government jobs during WW II, and he and Polly and the baby traveled to East Tennessee, Colorada and Oregon. In the mid 1940's they moved to Michigan. He had been doing carpentry work for several years, but it wasn't until then that he met someone that started teaching him to be a real carpenter. They still did a lot of traveling around the country, and he never had a problem finding a job. But, no matter where they went they always returned to Michigan, and finally settled there permanently in 1953. He started contracting, and then in 1956 he went into the building business. He retired from that in 1976, and opened a cabinet shop.
During the 1930's he was one of the Moore Boys of the Brown's Corner/Holland's Gin area , who played baseball around northern Alabam and southern Tennessee. For two years he lead the Tennessee Valley league with a batting average of 410. His positions were pitcher and shortstop.
He was also a crack shot with a rifle and shotgun, and did a lot of hunting in Alabama, Michigan and Wyoming until he lost interest in the 1970s. He decided he would much rather just watch the animals.
