Narrative
William held the office of Hereditary Sheriff of Perthshire in 1471. He sat in Parliament among the feudal barons as Laird of Ruthven. He held the office of Conservator of a Truce with England in 1484. He was invested as a Knight in January 1484. He fought in the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488, where he sided with King James III against the rebel nobles. He was created 1st Lord Ruthven [Scotland] on 29 January 1488. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Scotland] in August 1513. After 1515 he was one of the four Guardians of the boy-King James V.
