Robert was invested as a Knight circa 1451. He was created 1st Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock [Scotland] circa 18 July 1454. He held the office of Regent of Scotland in 1460, for the infant King James III. He was a commissioner for a truce with King Edward IV in 1464. He held the office of Great Chamberlain [Scotland] between 1466 and 1469. He held the office of Governor of the Realm [Scotland] on 25 October 1466. On 8 September 1468 he obtained the cession of Orkney to Scotland from King Christian of Norway, as dowry for the King of Norway's daughter, whose marriage with King James III he had arranged. On 22 November 1469 he was attainted for high treason, and his peerage forfeited.
